Healthy Home, Healthy You!

Hi. I am so glad you’re here because that means you are interested in creating a less toxic home environment to better your health and the health of your loved ones. If you’re coming over from Instagram, go ahead and click those three dots up top to open this link in your browser for easy saving and shopping.

Striving to have a less toxic home is the goal. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to be dealing with an illness either. Prevention is just as important when it comes to your health. Our bodies are bombarded with environmental toxins daily, so keeping our home, the place we spend a majority of our time, as toxin free as possible is important. Your home shouldn’t be a place where you are overburdened with toxins too.

There are hidden toxins and chemicals in things you probably don’t even realize. Candles for example! How many of you have used the popular brands like Yankee or Bath and Body Works? Unfortunately most of these candles are made from paraffin wax which when burned, releases toxic chemicals known as carcinogens that are hazardous to your health. I think companies are starting to go in the right direction by using more soy wax and lead free cotton wicks, but then you have another trouble maker known as fragrance. Fragrance is now known as the next secondhand smoke and should not be burning in your house.  Fragrance can also be found in household items like shampoos, conditioners, skin care, perfume, cologne, bubble bath, room sprays, household cleaners and more.

For anyone who has seen My Big fat Greek Wedding…The Windex scenes make me cringe because on a toxicity level, Windex is level D and has been linked to many severe illnesses. Cleaning products are probably the number one product that has the most chemicals and toxins that you’re putting on your counters which your food and hands touch and your floors where you walk, kids crawl and pets lie.

So picture this, today’s cleaning day, you’re cleaning the floors, kitchen, and bathrooms. You do a couple loads of laundry while you have a few candles burning. You clean the carpets, mirrors and windows thinking today is a deep cleaning day, but what’s really happening is you and your family are now being exposed to a high volume of toxic chemicals in every single product that you’re spraying into the air or on every surface you and your family touch. The air isn’t being purified with all those smells, it’s filling the air with harmful chemicals and toxins that overtime can have a massive impact on health. Your head starts to hurt from breathing in all the chemicals throughout the day. You decide you want to repaint a little section of the wall before you clean the floors in the laundry room so you whip out a can of old paint full of VOCs (volatile organic chemicals) filling the air with even more toxins that trigger illness in the body and burden your system. Your clothes are now soaked in bleach, formaldehyde and more that have been linked to health problems. Your body is now burdened with working extra hard to detox all those chemicals.

Now, picture the same day, but you’re using products that are clean. The air is truly purified, the headache that you otherwise would’ve had while using the chemical ridden products hasn’t shown up, you and your family can breathe easy both physically and metaphorically because no one is being exposed to harmful and dangerous products. Your carpet hasn’t absorbed a bunch of toxic sludge. Your dog who is eating that food your kid dropped on the floor is now safe and isn’t licking up toxic residue. Your clothes smell like essential oils and everything is clean and pure. That section of the wall you painted doesn’t reek of heavy fumes because you used a paint with zero VOCs. You just restocked the towel closet with nontoxic organic towels and sheets that you know won’t harm anyone when they sleep or come out of the shower. And you go to bed knowing that you and your family are safe. THAT is how a cleaning day should be. That is how you should feel in your safe space. Safe.

Remember Healthy Home, Healthy you.

Before I get into dividing everything into categories I want to highlight specific companies I work with and have codes for because I want to make it easier for you to be able to create a healthier home. I only align with brands I’ve either used myself and am passionate about or brands I’m eager to try myself because it is important for me to share with you companies that align with my values and heart.

When it comes to our health, there are many factors that come into play. When you work on one area of your wellbeing, it creates a ripple effect for other areas of your life that contribute to your wellbeing as well. Home environment is one of those key elements. Your home should be a place your body can breathe and feel safe, so making these changes will lessen the load on your body. I truly hope you find this information helpful. I know I too am still learning, so I am sharing with you what I know so far in my schooling and my years of learning how to protect your health.

Before we begin, I’d like to start off by saying I appreciate you purchasing through my clickable links as I get a small commission for purchases made through affiliated links in this post. So, thank you for supporting me. It means the world.

Ruggables

Ruggable rugs are the only rugs that we use in our house. they don’t treat their rugs with chemicals and they are pet friendly so you can easily wash them.

My Favorite Picks:

Earth Hero

Earth Hero. What an epic name! Earth Hero is a company devoted to saving Mother Earth with Sustainable, Eco Friendly, Zero Waste Shopping. Not everything on the site is cruelty free or nontoxic so be aware of things that contain fragrance, copper, metal, and wool, but other than that, this company is amazing for everything for the Home.

Ecos Paint

Ecos Paint is a nontoxic, zero VOC (volatile organic compound) paint that you can feel good about using in your home, on furniture, your walls etc. It contains zero volatile chemicals that trigger viruses and illness in the body. There is an endless variety.

Living Libations

Sweet Water Decor

Sweet Water Decor is one of my favorite shops to buy soy candles, wooden trays, cute matches in glass bottles with a cork and more. I love working with this company because most of the candles are nontoxic and everything is my style! Look for the candles that are made with essential oils in the description not just fragrance oils .

Root Pretty

Root is my favorite Company and I’m not just saying that because I’m a model for them now. I have been using Root for years because I truly believe in their values, quality and they are truly nontoxic. They’re the best and I love working with them. They’re nontoxic, clean, eco friendly, vegan, cruelty free and beautiful. They have non toxic soap, essential oils, and more.

More Nontoxic Candles

I already mentioned Sweet Water Decor and Root above for candles, but here are some extra nontoxic selections for every room in the house.

Coconut Bowls

Use code CHELSEADIANE for 10% off.

Let’s start with the Bedroom. The place where we deserve a peaceful, nontoxic sleep.

  • For anything bed related, go up to shop Delilah Home and Avocado Green Mattress for beautiful wood bed frames, vegan mattresses, sheets, mattress toppers, blankets, comforters and more. My favorite is the Vegan line from Avocado. I have the mattress topper and I love it.

  • For Rugs and nontoxic candles, see above.

  • I also suggest getting a few Salt Lamps to keep the air healthy and protect yourself from EMFs. You can go to my EMF Protection Blog HERE to find salt lamps and all you’d need for that.

Clean Air is important, so along with the salt lamps, I suggest using:

  • Essential Oils: use with caution around babies and pets. Research which essential oils are safe to diffuse for your living situation.

  • Air Purifier

  • Plants that clean the air like Golden Pathos, Snake Plant, Rubber Plant, and Peace Lily. These plants also help to mitigate EMFs.

Kitchen

When it comes to our kitchen, this is an area in the house that can be riddled with toxins. Metals from your pots and pans, aluminum from foil, chemicals in plastics from your bowls and your Tupperware leaching into your food. The kitchen is also an area that gets cleaned daily and most household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals. That’s the last thing that should be on your counter. For the kitchen look for lead free glass, nontoxic ceramic pots and pans, untreated wood, bamboo, and when it comes to knives, stainless steel. The products we use in our kitchen are below in my favorites.

My favorite nontoxic kitchen items:

Also, look at Earth Hero. They have a large variety of sustainable and bamboo kitchen items.

Bathroom

Bathroom Favorites

My blog “Magical Bath” has all my favorite bathroom items. Organic towels, robes, bath caddy, bamboo hair towels, and so much more.

  • Earth Hero for nontoxic bath rugs.

Living room

  • I’m still researching how to have healthier furniture when it comes to couches and chairs. When it comes to certain things that are out of our control or way too expensive like nontoxic furniture, get what you can and don’t worry. Just keep your air clean, wash the furniture off and let the room air out when you get new furniture.

  • Again, Ruggables are my favorite for our Rugs.
They are nontoxic, beautiful and more affordable. We also have pets, so it’s been so helpful to be able to wash our rugs with ease.

  • I also suggest getting salt lamps for every room in the house. Two in the living room and kitchen.

  • For blankets you can find some at Avocado, Deliliah and Earth Hero above. I also put together some of my favorites. When it comes to blankets and a healthy lifestyle I give myself a little bit more leniency since the majority of my home is nontoxic. For blankets I have a variety of soft blankets for the soul that aren’t quite Nontoxic Or eco-friendly and some that are organic and nontoxic. Same goes for throw pillows for me. We buy a mixture of store-bought and organic since they’re pretty expensive and hard to find, but if you want to get nontoxic blankets get organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, and linen. For pillows, get organic cotton, Natural latex, bamboo or Kapok.

Organic Throw Pillows

This Etsy shop sells organic kapok throw pillows.

Backyard

Something my family and I use and love all the time is our backyard fire pit. We used to have one that was toxic and smelled funny. Now we have this nontoxic fire pit that we feel safe using. We live in a place that is always windy, so we love that it shields the wind as well so we can still enjoy a fire and roast some plant based s’mores.

Nontoxic Repellent

Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes oh my! Conventional repellent and yard treatments are full of toxic chemicals with DDT, known to cause neurological damage and a host of other illnesses. Cedarcide is by far the best for nontoxic bug spray, lawn treatments, lawn chips, and more that are effective in repelling bugs and NO DDT! Yay. It kills on contact. Their products are made of Cedarwood Oil which is a neurotoxin to bugs. I do not suggest getting the lemongrass one, just the Cedarwood because lemon grass attracts bees. It is safe for children and pets, but do your research for using on or around babies under six months. You can spray the original bug spray on your dogs, you can attach the lawn treatment to your hose, and you can even get the house treatment that won’t leave toxic residue all over your house.

Nontoxic Home Cleaning

Thrive Market carries many nontoxic cleaning products. I’ll list some of my favorites, but just be sure to get items without fragrance and read the ingredients. If you’re not sure about an ingredient, go to Google and type in the ingredient with “EWG” at the end and then click on the link that says EWG with that ingredient and it’ll tell you how clean it is 1-2 is very clean 3-5 is medium toxicity and 6-10 is high toxicity like endocrine disruptors and cancer-causing chemicals.

Seventh Generation Free and Clear Line

Seventh generation free and clear line has zero fragrances, chemicals and uses recycled plastic. Add some essential oils and shake to add your favorite smells. Lemon, lavender, and eucalyptus are good for cleaning. They have soap, laundry detergent, cleaners, stain remover‘s, dish soap, dishwasher soap, glass cleaner and more.

Dr Bronner

Dr. Browner is our go to for soap. It’s multipurpose, nontoxic and made with essential oils. My favorite is the eucalyptus. Find my picks and DIY farmhouse soap dispensers.

Feng Shui

Feng shui has always been known as the flow of energy through arranging furniture. I learned that feng shui is also about bringing elements of nature into your space to promote more peace, tranquility and balance. If you have no control in this moment over where you live, if you’re sick or if you’re unhappy in your home environment; If you feel off or anxious, find ways of making your space your own and bring in some nature elements to promote a sense of peace and wellbeing. Salt lamps, paintings of nature, and healing crystals are all examples. Paint the walls, bring in some decor that makes you feel joy and peace. For Decor, Earth Hero(above) has some wood and bamboo decor. You can still get decor at your favorite stores or do DIY projects with the ECOS paints and stains. As long as you are taking steps to a healthier, more nontoxic home, that’s a win.

Nontoxic Emotional Environment

Last, but certainly not least, creating a nontoxic lifestyle isn’t just about a clean environment. It’s also about cleaning and clearing up any toxic energy or relationships in your living situation. A healthy home environment includes emotional health.

I want you to ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I feel at ease around the people I live with?

  • Do I feel supported?

  • Do I feel loved?

  • Do I feel at home with this person/people?

  • Do I feel safe?

If you answered no to any of these questions, ask yourself why. Why don’t I feel at ease? Why don’t I feel supported? Why don’t I feel loved? Why don’t I feel at home with this person or people? Why don’t I feel safe?

Once you become clear on the why, ask yourself if you feel safe to have a conversation with this person/these people. If you don’t feel safe physically, you’re most likely in a toxic environment and it’s time to reassess your living situation. If you don’t feel safe emotionally, is it something the other person is doing? Is it fear or something from your past that you’re projecting onto the other person? Get really clear on your why especially when it comes to your safety. If you don’t feel safe, here is a support hotline for transitioning out of that unhealthy environment. If you do feel safe, open the line of communication about how you’re feeling and what changes can be made either together or separately that will help you get to a healthier emotional environment. Work on your relationships. Communicate what you need to feel emotionally supported in a healthy space when you’re at home. If you’re living with roommates, family, friends, communicate with them. If you’re needs aren’t being met or there’s not effort toward positive change, again, reassess.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, as long as you’re taking steps in the right direction. That’s all that matters.

Lastly
